Shocking images

Can someone tell me one good reason why a young girl should undergo this?

How in the world can a woman do this to a six or so year old girl? These are scars, pain and traumas for the rest of her life! Please help to stop these barbaric acts.

This also proves that is not Female Genital Cutting but real MUTILATION.

Bogaletch Gebre

'Bogaletch Gebre knows exactly what women in her Ethiopian community are going through. Along with her sisters, the women's rights activist was a victim of female genital mutilation (FGM) when she was a child in a part of Ethiopia where the practise was carried out on every girl.'

Seven years old

'A girl of seven was the youngest victim of female genital mutilation (FGM) treated by the NHS in the past two years, according to new data.'

'Some 20,000 girls in England and Wales are thought to be at risk, according to government estimates, but there is a lack of accurate figures.'

Treatment for Genital Mutilation

Not one, not ten but 640 women have been mutilated. And this in 2013 and in the UK!

Egyptian Islamists 'could undermine years of work' on FGM

'The organisation's director Nehad Abud Komsan said that Salafist groups like the Muslim Brotherhood, which are gaining political traction in the country, are "destroying years of efforts to protect girls and women in Egypt and, unfortunately, by using religion", the Voice of America reported.'

How can this be?

'The fight against female genital mutilation (FGM) in Indonesia (a country with a population of 240 million, 85% Muslim), has encountered a major setback: having been banned for more than five years, the practice has been endorsed by the government in the last few months.''

Violence against women: Emine Bozkurt

'As much as most of us might think it’s a problem far away from us, it is not. Approximately 180,000 women in Europe undergo or are in danger of undergoing FGM every year. Due to the trans-border character of it, I have persistently asked for a European policy to fight this problem. '

How can Europe act to end female genital mutilation?

'In the light of the European Commission’s recent commitment to prevent female genital mutilation, Amnesty International’s END FGM European Campaign is devoting a day (27 February) to exploring practical ways of ending this human rights violation. It will unveil four artistic creations which envisage Europe, once women and girls are finally free from the clutches of this harmful practice.'

De-linking Female Genital Mutilation From Religion

'Female genital mutilation has long survived, hidden under the cloak of religious, cultural, and tribal practices, but this week, as we commemorate the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), it is time for every leader whether political or religious, whether male or female, to unequivocally stand in opposition to FGM. We can no longer allow the ignorance surrounding women's rights and FGM to be perpetuated by traditions and rituals disguised as religious teachings.'

We can’t end FGM, government says

'In an interview with The Citizen this week, Ms Mwalimu said the only weapon at the disposal of the government was public education. She added: “We cannot end this problem only by the force of the law. Our greatest hope is to create awareness. We have been trying to engage traditional leaders who are said to encourage the practice.” The crackdown on female circumcision in Mara region during the season that started on December 15 last year did not materialise despite the public pronouncements and promises of government officials.'

Global ban

'Alvilda Jablonko, coordinator of the No Peace Without Justice Programme on FGM, has been fighting for such a ban in the U.N. General Assembly since 2010. It was finally adopted Dec. 20, 2012.'
